  8. Do you use your computer for business as well as pleasure?  Then TimeClock
  9. can save you money at tax time!

  11. TimeClock is a Windows program that keeps track of time you've spent on
  12. your computer.  Time is charged to one or more "projects" from your list by
  13. "punching in" when you begin work on each project.  In addition, projects
  14. may be grouped into different "categories" (e.g. business and pleasure)
  15. that you choose.  To give one example, this will greatly simplify your
  16. computation of the percentage of time your computer was used for business
  17. purposes, and thus the percentage of its value that you can depreciate or
  18. deduct as a business expense on your taxes.

  20. The reporting program summarizes usage by both project and category, giving
  21. hours and percentage of time spent in each.  If you categorize your
  22. projects as business and non-business, the bottom line is the figure that
  23. you need for IRS Form 4562 Depreciation and Amortization, lines 23c and
  24. 24c.  In addition, you can answer "Yes" on line 22b which asks whether you
  25. have written evidence to support the claimed business use: this may reduce
  26. the chances that your return will be selected for audit.  [The line numbers
  27. were from 1993 tax forms, and may differ in other years.]

  29. There are other time manager programs, but TimeClock is simple (so simple
  30. that you might actually use it), it does the job, and is less expensive
  31. than the others.
